To mark the 10th anniversary of sketch, from 1st March 2012 Turner Prize winning artist Martin Creed transformed the Gallery restaurant in the first of a new long-term programme of artist-designed restaurants for the venue. Through a series of new works both functional and decorative, Creed created an environment that is at once as an exhibition, an artwork, a restaurant and an Events space.
Following the huge success of Martin Creed’s restaurant commission in 2012. Celebrated British artist, David Shrigley, has yet again transformed the Gallery, David Shrigley's Gallery opened 6th June 2014... David Shrigley says, ‘I'm delighted to be working with sketch on such an exciting commission. Amongst other things I have created all the ceramic tableware for the restaurant. It will be the first artwork that I have made that can go in the dishwasher. It will be very clean artwork. Clean artwork is good artwork, in my opinion.’
Prior to 2012 sketch has hosted over fifty major exhibitions of moving image in the gallery, including shows by Carsten Nicolai, Jo hn Baldessari, Jonas Mekas and Sylvie Fleury, as well as numerous off-site projects such as the CINACT series at The Gate Cinema in collaboration with Serpentine Gallery and international touring programmes such as A New Stance for Tomorrow at Bidoun Artists Cinema, Art Dubai and Volta Film, Tribeca Grand Screen, New York.
With this new initiative sketch continues to contribute to 9 Conduit Street’s rich heritage as a destination for experimentation in design, art and architecture in a building whose previous incarnations over the past century include hosting the headquarters of RIBA and the Atelier of Christian Dior.
The sketch exhibitions programme is curated by Clea Irving
